Finishing touches.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  “I love finishing and binding my rugs.”  I hear many rug hookers say that they put off this step, because they don’t like to do it.  But doing a nice finish on your rug or wall hanging is so important to the overall look of the piece.  And it means that it’s finished!

I must admit that I wasn’t completely in love with my Sunflowers for Sarah rug until I had hooked the border and chosen the color of wool yarn for the binding.  I now can say that I love this rug!  And I hope our daughter-in- law will, too.

Because this rug will be on a dark brown wood floor, I dyed dark brown wool for the border.  I wanted it to feel like part of the floor.  Two rows of colored wool were added for interest.  The purple row goes all the way around the border (every rug needs purple!), but the other row changes color to match what’s going on in the design.  I like that the color of the sky, mountain, and field peek through.

Instead of choosing brown yarn for the binding, I used wool that is a brownish-purple color.  This might be called “cordovan”, if we were talking about shoe color.

I have shown photos of my binding process below.  I love my “best of both worlds” binding method.  Using cotton clothesline gives a nice even edge and adds some weight to a rug.  It lands on the floor with a satisfying “plop”!

There's a lot of beauty out there and in the finishing of a hooked rug.

I like to baste the linen over the clothesline before whipping with yarn.

This photo shows that the front and back of the rug look identical.  No binding tape is needed and the finished look is very neat and tidy.
